London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to meet with European leaders in Paris on Monday for an emergency summit, according to Britain’s PA Media.
The meeting follows growing concerns over transatlantic unity after U.S. President Donald Trump held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as part of his efforts to broker a peace agreement in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In a statement issued by Downing Street on Saturday, Starmer stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties between the U.S. and Europe. “The UK is committed to ensuring that the U.S. and Europe remain united. We must not allow divisions within the alliance to divert our focus from the external threats we face,” he said.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Starmer described the moment as critical for national security. “This is a pivotal moment for our security. Europe must step up within NATO, working alongside the U.S. to safeguard Ukraine’s future and confront the threat from Russia,” he added.
The summit, proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, was revealed by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski during the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. Sikorski emphasized the seriousness with which European leaders are approaching the issue.
However, tensions are brewing over Europe’s role in potential peace talks. Trump’s special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, stated on Saturday that European representatives would be excluded from negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict.
